2008 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The great american pony car adds bullitt to its arsenal. introductionthe ford mustang defined the pony car segment in 1964 and was a runaway sales success. It helped create a niche that exploded in popularity with the camaro, firebird, barracuda, cougar, javelin, and challenger. The mustang gt comes with a 300-hp v8 and is an absolute hoot to drive, making all the right sounds, hanging onto corners tenaciously, and delivering thrilling acceleration performance. The american pony car has never been better than the current mustang gt. the mustang is available as a coupe or convertible. The mustang v6 deluxe is a nice cruiser and its 4. 0-liter v6 engine is a solid performer, all for around $20,000. But the mustang gt is what the mustang is all about and the basis of the legend. for 2008, a new bullitt model joins the herd. Faithfully styled to celebrate the hero car in the famous chase scene starring steve mcqueen, the 2008 mustang bullitt is tuned to a higher level than the standard gt. Some media have positioned the bullitt as nothing more than a hopped up mustang, but that sells what's going on here a bit short. Rather than simply bolting on some modifications and re-tuning the setup, ford took the higher road, thoroughly re-engineering and painstakingly massaging the bullitt to attain its additional performance. In other words, they did it the hard way, the right way. Ford used technology learned from development of the shelby cars, and the chief engineer for the mustang says technology gained from the development of the bullitt will be used in the next-generation mustang. In any case, the bullitt is more responsive than the mustang gt. Ford plans to build about 7,000 bullitt models. for 2008, three shelby models are available: the 319-hp shelby gt comes in coupe and convertible form along with the 540-hp shelby gt500kr coupe. Its solid rear axle is bouncy on bad pavement, however, and all this comes at a substantial price increase. for 2008, front side airbags come standard on all mustangs, and high-intensity discharge headlights and interior ambient lighting are newly available. while its styling is retro inspired, the mustang is a thoroughly modern car. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design. the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and cuvs, all of which are larger than their slippery styling suggests. we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for big cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a modern v6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. the edge has a contemporary look we find appealing. We like its bold chrome grille. Ford sync communications and entertainment system is available on the 2008 edge, allowing the driver to change radio stations and make phone calls using voice commands. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. What does all this mean? (the track is the distance between the left and right wheels. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs. the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan. despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing. the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility. front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls. The interior appearance package adds red seat inserts and contrasting red stitching that combine to give the interior a sporty look. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus allow for less intrusion from the wheel wells. carrying cargo is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for.

2006 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, available with v6 and seven-passenger seating. introductionit's not often that toyota finds itself chasing the competition in a class that it invented. Such is the case, however, with the rav4, the original small sport utility built on a car chassis. It's not that there has been anything fundamentally wrong with the vehicle. Other suvs also offer a third row of seats, boosting passenger capacity from five to seven. no longer, in either regard. With the 2006 rav4, toyota has caught up. There's a new, 269-horsepower, 3. 5-liter v6 engine coupled to a new, five-speed automatic. And there's an optional third row of seats that, by the way, folds into the floor, leaving a flat cargo space that holds almost five more cubic feet of stuff than the '05 model. The rav4 has been a standard-setter virtually from its inception. And the exterior is fresh, less flashy, with fewer styling gimmicks. But the same can't be said for the interior, where some of the updating appears not to have been so much an improvement as a change to something different, while still just as good as before. the 2006 rav4 is a mix, then, of best, better and good, but with one reservation: the v6 seems almost too much for the package, as if in catching up, toyota leapt too far ahead. It's a good, solid engine, and it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. It has to haul as many as seven people, for instance, and it raises the tow rating to as high as 3500 pounds. But as it's engineered for the 2006 rav4, it just might be more than was needed. All three can be upgraded to the 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 with a new five-speed automatic 2,035 for the base; $1,915 for sport and limited). Optional are two stereos, one the same upgrade as offered on the base, the other a jbl premium system with nine speakers, including a subwoofer 590); power tilt-and-slide moonroof 900); plus many of the options available for the base model. Befitting the model's designation, the third-row seat is not offered on the sport. the limited model upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control; an in-dash, six-disc cd changer; power-adjustable driver seat; heated outside mirrors; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rear privacy glass; cargo cover; fog lamps; p225/65r17 tires on alloy wheels; and a full, hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 810) and a rear-seat entertainment system for the v6 1,075). Leather seats are optional 1,050). Front seat heaters 440), audio upgrades, and other features are available. safety features on all 2006 rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control and traction control. However, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are optional on all three models 650). We strongly recommend getting them. Curtain airbags are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover, the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents, while side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the new rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design is more serious, more substantive than the '06, with fewer curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished look. the all-new 2006 rav4's front end contains all the same elements as the '05, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. The wider track (the distance between the tires side to side), by more than two inches front and rear, gives the '06 rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers. a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat; from the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger seven-passenger, japanese-brand import, priced a notch or two above the rav4. The seven additional inches of wheelbase (measured between the front and rear wheels) and almost 14 inches of added overall length stretch the cabin and give the windshield a sleeker rake. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Wheel well arches blend smoothly into the fenders. the back end shows more revision than either the side or front of the '06 rav4. Taillights are slightly smaller and positioned higher on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, but it's a less-aggressive recess and contained fully in the swing-gate. Thus, no longer does the bumper house the bottom third of the tire. The rear license plate preserves the asymmetrical look by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside the 2006 rav4, what change there is has been effected mostly for the sake of change. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish the new from the old. Most noteworthy are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues. the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel combined with the multi-plane adjustable driver's seat enables almost any percentile driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats deliver the full backlight to the inside rearview mirror. the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, sans bolsters, but no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch. the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints that do, however, and to their credit, compel proper height adjustments to spare occupants' upper backs. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting forward the outboard second row units, while not especially easy, isn't as much a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-bodied sport utilities. the new rav4's longer wheelbase delivered more than space for a third row of seats. It also allowed almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom over the '05. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch. Its major competitor, the 2006 honda cr-v, betters the rav4 in second-row headroom and hiproom, by about a half-inch and an inch, respectively, and in front row hiproom by a pinch more than one inch; elsewhere, differences are less than a half-inch. The 2006 suzuki xl-7 provides the sole seven-passenger competitor in the class and betters the rav4 in third-row headroom and legroom by about an inch and a half; it trails in every other measure by an inch or two. Same for cargo space, where the toyota beats the honda by a cubic foot but comes in almost two cubic feet behind the suzuki. most everything in the instrument cluster and on the dash of the new rav4 is where it was in the 2005 models. The speedometer is now centered in the cluster, swapping places with the tachometer, which is now off to the left, and the fuel and coolant gauges are conjoined on the right, instead of splitting their own circle. But the placement, and most important, the usability of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as the '05, which means very good, and the. Properly equipped, highlander can tow up to 3,500 pounds, not all that much by truck standards. interiorfew vehicles are easier to get in and out of than the toyota highlander. Neither climbing up nor stepping down is required. This makes the highlander one of the most convenient trucks on the planet for running daily errands. These seats are flat and lean, but supportive and comfortable and adjust to suit various-size drivers. Their higher ride height provides a commanding view of the road. The sloping hood of the highlander makes the forward view even more encompassing. the second row seats up to three passengers, but is better for two. The center of the second-row seat folds down into an arm rest with cup holders, adding comfort, and the seats recline for additional comfort. It's split 60/40 and folds down with a cleverly articulated seat bottom. It folds fairly flat but not perfectly flat. The second-row seat slides forward to make access to the third row easier, and to provide more legroom for third-row passengers. toyota intends for the third row to be used only occasionally. As average-sized adults, we found sitting in the third row uncomfortable. This relatively cramped situation makes the third-row seats best for short trips or kids. Also, the side-curtain airbags do not protect third-row passengers as they do in a toyota sienna minivan. Purely for transporting people, a minivan will always be better. Power window buttons are right there on the doors. Radio and heater controls use simple dials and amply sized buttons and operate intuitively. V6 models come with aluminum interior accents. Limited models come with simulated silver and burled maple wood-grain dash trim and door scuff plates, but the wood grain trim on the center stack looks like fake wood. The standard climate control is a single-zone system. the shifter is uniquely positioned more as a part of the dash than on a central console. This opens up the space between the front seats.
